How to re-attach a loose label

Labels may be small, but they carry meaning, marking the maker, the garment’s origin, and often, the only visible trace of a piece’s story. Our labels are intentionally stitched to remain subtle and non-intrusive, however they may loosen over time with washing and wear. Fortunately, reattaching a label is a simple, satisfying task that can be completed in just a few steps.

What you will need

Matching sewing thread (around 20 centimetres)
A sewing needle
Pins
Scissors
Optional: Thimble or fine needle for delicate fabrics

Step-by-step: How to re-attach a loose label

Step 1: Position the label

Turn the garment inside out. Place the label back into its original position, aligning it with any stitch marks that remain. Use a small pin to keep it securely in place. Make sure the label lies flat and isn’t puckering the fabric.

Step 2: Anchor the thread

Cut your thread, double it, and knot the ends. From the inside of the garment, pass the needle up through the fold at the corner of the label. Make a small 'X' shaped anchor stitch to secure your starting point and provide structure to the repair.

Step 3: Stitch the label in place

Sew three to four small stitches through the corner of the label and into the garment. Be careful not to push the needle all the way through to the outside of the fabric, especially on fine or knit materials. This keeps the repair invisible from the front.
Repeat for the second corner, creating identical stitching for a balanced finish.

Step 4: Tie off the thread

On your final pass, bring the needle up behind the label. Make a discreet knot as close to the fabric as possible. Trim the thread, leaving a small tail of around half a centimetre.

A note on labels

Our garments are designed with care in every detail, including the placement and stitching of each label. If your label loosens, re-sewing it not only restores the garment's integrity but also helps maintain the thoughtful finish Afar is known for.
